Qualcomm has officially confirmed that its next-generation flagship mobile chipset will be called Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Of course, the chip name may feel like skipping generations, but the company explains the reason behind this move. This platform will set a new benchmark for performance, efficiency, and cutting-edge capabilities in premium smartphones.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will redefine premium smartphone performance

Qualcomm will unveil the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 during Snapdragon Summit, running from September 23 to 25, 2025. It succeeds last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, which powers several high-end Android smartphones, including the Galaxy S25 series. So naturally, people expected the successor to be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.

However, the American company has chosen Gen 5 to mark the fifth generation of its premium 8-series platforms. The idea is to reinforce its leadership position and simplify how consumers understand the product roadmap. “Think of it like this: Gen 5 isn’t just a number. It’s a signal that this platform leads the family forward,” the company noted.

Qualcomm’s naming strategy for its flagship chipsets is mainly based on three factors: performance capabilities, launch timing, and the positioning of each platform within the broader portfolio. The company continues to use the “Elite” branding because this represents the highest level of performance and the pinnacle of the Snapdragon 8-series family. The Snapdragon 8 Elite introduced the custom Oryon CPU, offering industry-leading speeds and incredible efficiency. This year’s Gen 5 model takes that innovation to the next level.

The company says several OEMs will adopt the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip in their smartphones. The new name will make it easier for everyone (both OEMs and Buyers) to understand where each product fits and when it debuts. Like the previous Ultra generation, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra may feature Qualcomm’s latest advanced chip. We will learn the detailed specifications of the next-generation 8 Elite processor during the Snapdragon Summit event next week.
