It’s been almost a week since Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 FE, and it comes with a number of notable improvements over its predecessor. Right now, you can also buy the Galaxy S25 FE and take advantage of a double-storage offer, which likely won’t last long.

The Galaxy S25 FE doesn’t feature ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

While rumors suggested that the Galaxy S25 FE might feature an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, it turns out it does not. According to a Samsung spokesperson, who confirmed this to Android Authority, the rumors have been put to rest. Instead, the Galaxy S25 FE comes with an optical in-display fingerprint sensor.

Although Samsung confirmed the type of sensor used in the Galaxy S25 FE, it didn’t provide a reason. The most likely explanation is cost. Optical sensors are cheaper to produce, which aligns with the phone’s mid-range positioning. After all, there needs to be a clear distinction between flagship models and the FE line.

Even though the S25 FE lacks an ultrasonic sensor, Samsung’s higher-end phones continue to include them. Since the Galaxy S10, flagship Galaxy S models have relied on ultrasonic sensors for faster and more reliable unlocking. Naturally, the latest Galaxy S25 series also feature ultrasonic fingerprint sensors.

Ultrasonic sensors are generally faster and more accurate than optical ones. They use sound waves to create a 3D map of your fingerprint, allowing them to read wet or dirty fingers and work through curved screens.

Optical sensors, meanwhile, use light to capture a 2D image, which works well under normal conditions. But it can be slower or less reliable when fingers are wet or dirty. Ultrasonic sensors are more advanced but also more expensive, which is why mid-range phones like the S25 FE often use optical sensors.
