One UI 9 to Bring Foreign Material Detection With Galaxy Z Fold 8, Flip 8, Wide Fold

Samsung’s 2026 foldables may be months away from their debut, but the leaks aren’t slowing down. Most likely, the company will announce the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and Galaxy Z Wide Fold at its summer Unpacked event, and a clever trick may have leaked already. It could help you save some money you might otherwise spend on accidental damage.
Samsung may finally tackle foldable debris issues with upcoming One UI 9 trick
All three foldables will debut running Android 17-based One UI 9. With early builds of One UI 9 already circulating, folks over at Android Authority have spotted references suggesting an on-screen warning if you don’t fold the device properly. It may be called the Foreign Material Detection feature, and it’ll most likely debut with One UI 9.
The strings describe two alerts. One reads, “Phone not fully folded.” They also include a full message explaining that the device failed to close completely, likely because debris or other foreign material is blocking the two halves. “Your phone didn’t fold completely. Open your phone again, and check if there is any foreign substances on the screen to avoid screen damage. If you don’t need this detection alert, you can turn it off in the Settings.”

Strings found in the leaked software also confirm Samsung’s 2026 foldable lineup. We’re looking at the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and a new model widely referred to as the Wide Galaxy Z Fold. All three appear in related graphics inside One UI 9, giving us another peek at what’s coming in a few months.

The Wide Fold is the most interesting of the bunch. Based on the images and earlier animations, it seems to adopt a more passport-like shape with a 16:10 outer display. That should make the cover screen feel more natural to use without unfolding the device. It’s still unclear whether the Foreign Material Detection feature will be limited to the new hardware or roll out to older foldables through a One UI 9 update. Since this is all based on early code, nothing’s set in stone yet.
