If you enjoy gaming on your Galaxy device, you now have one more reason to be excited for One UI 9, which will be based on Android 17. One thing about Galaxy devices, or any Android device for that matter, is that there’s no shortage of controllers you can buy, but mapping has always been a hassle for lesser known brands. Android 17 may finally fix that by introducing native controller remapping.

A big controller overhaul is coming in Android 17, and it’s for gamers and gamers only

Early code in recent Android Canary builds shows that the operating system is changing how it handles game controllers (via Android Authority). The latest builds reveal two key additions. Android 17 adds a native permission for controller remapping, listed as android.permission.CONTROLLER_REMAPPING. Google is also developing a virtual gamepad system that lets physical controllers work with games that only support touch controls.

Right now, Android only provides predefined button layouts for popular hardware like Xbox and PlayStation controllers. If you use a lesser known controller or want to change the default button positions, you run into the platform’s limitations. Some players turn to third party apps that use Accessibility workarounds to intercept inputs, but these tools are unreliable and can add noticeable lag.

Android 17 aims to fix this issue with a system-level remapping engine. The new virtual gamepad found in the code works as a software version of a physical controller. Android takes the original button press, converts it into a virtual input, and sends the mapped command to the game. Since the game reads it as a standard controller action, it should work even with titles that support only touch controls.

The code also points to a new controller settings page where users can see connected controllers and adjust remapping options. Android 17 is still months away, but these early signs suggest Google is finally improving its approach to gaming. For Galaxy users, Android 17 means One UI 9. And that likely won’t arrive before July 2026.
