One of the reasons Apple is so sought after is the ecosystem that connects all its devices. Even though Google has been steadily expanding its cross-device features, there are still some areas where Apple comes out ahead. Fortunately, one more line may soon blur as Android 17 appears ready to introduce a universal clipboard manager.

Android 17 may bring Universal Clipboard for smoother cross-device copy and paste

Folks at Android Authority report that Android 17 could include a universal clipboard system that allows users to copy something on one device and instantly paste it on another. The outlet spotted the work in early Android 17 development files. The latest Android beta and canary builds contain references to a new UniversalClipboardManager inside Google’s continuity framework. This is the same area where Google is preparing its Handoff-style features.

Based on the early code, the system listens for clipboard changes on the phone, sends that data to Google Play Services, and then syncs it to a linked device. For now, the implementation appears to focus on text, but that could expand as Google moves toward completion. For Samsung users, that means the feature might arrive with the launch of One UI 9.

Galaxy devices already offer multitasking and cross-device connectivity through Quick Share, Samsung Flow, and Phone Link, but clipboard syncing has never been built in. Some features rely on Microsoft apps or require specific setups, which makes the experience inconsistent. A universal clipboard integrated directly into Android would remove the need for workarounds.

If the recent past is any indication, Samsung will roll out One UI 9 with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 in mid-2026. If Google finalizes the universal clipboard in time, it will likely be included in that release. The feature could also extend to Samsung’s broader ecosystem, including Galaxy tablets and future Android-based laptops.
