Next month, Samsung is set to fully roll out One UI 8, which will debut on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. Thanks to early leaked builds and the ongoing beta program, we’ve already gotten a sneak peek at several features expected to make it into the final, stable release. Among them, the One UI 8 ZYF5 build introduces a new feature called Call Captions, which is essentially an accessibility tool.

One UI 8 ZYF5 includes a new Call Captions feature

Spotted by Tarun Vats on X, the One UI 8 ZYF5 beta build introduces a feature called Call Captions. This build seems to differ from the versions currently available through the beta program. For reference, One UI 8 Beta 2, which began rolling out today, carries the build number ZYF3. So there’s a good chance ZYF5 could be the next beta release, though that’s still unconfirmed. Take it with a pinch of salt.

One UI Call Captions

We tested the Call Captions feature on one of our international units running the ZYF5 build. The feature converts speech to text in real time, though it still feels a bit rough around the edges. We expect it will be more refined by the time the stable build is released. You can check out some screenshots. The first two are in Dutch, which the Call Captions feature does not support yet. However, it works slightly better with English, as shown in the third screenshot.

The description reads, “Show what each person says on the screen during calls,” adding “Captions can be useful when hearing is difficult. If needed, inform the other person that the call is being captioned.” There’s no telling how many languages will it support initially. For now, there’s only English (India) and the option to switch is greyed out, as of publication.

That said, we can expect to learn more as we get closer to the full release. Or, possibly when the next beta arrives. Either way, it’s a promising feature and could be a valuable addition, especially if you have a hearing impairment or find yourself in a noisy environment where listening clearly isn’t an option.
