One UI 8.5 is set to bring several new features to Galaxy devices. It’s currently available as beta for the Galaxy S25 trio, and we can expect the stable version to roll out with the Galaxy S26 series. One important new feature coming with One UI 8.5 is a partial screen recorder with an auto crop function.

One UI 8.5 brings a smarter screen recorder

As shared by Ice Universe, One UI 8.5 introduces partial screen recording. As the name suggests, this feature allows users to record only a selected portion of the screen instead of the entire display. The rest of the screen remains excluded from the recording.

The feature also includes auto detection and auto crop. When a video plays on the screen, the system can automatically detect and select the active area for recording. The detection works quickly and smoothly. If users are not satisfied with the automatic selection, they can manually adjust the recording area. There’s also a toggle available to record the full screen if needed.

This feature is expected to expand to more Galaxy models with the wider One UI 8.5 rollout later this year. The functionality does not appear very complex, so ideally most midrange devices should support it.

One UI 8.5 is shaping up to be a solid update with visual improvements and useful changes, potentially matching the level of One UI 7. It brings a more customizable Quick Panel, a better screen recorder, a redesigned Game Booster, and many other features. Apps like Settings, Phone, Samsung Messages, My Files, and Samsung Internet also get design tweaks.
