Google has been working on improving Quick Share for Android devices over the past few years. What started as Nearby Share has evolved with several key updates. In October 2024, Google was spotted (via Android Authority) testing a toggle to let Quick Share use mobile data for file sharing. However, it was removed when Nearby Share transitioned to Quick Share. Now, with the February 2025 Google Play Services, it’s finally official.
More Android devices are getting Quick Share’s sharing over the internet
Previously, if a Quick Share transfer lost its Wi-Fi Direct or Bluetooth connection, the transfer would fail, especially when sending larger files. However, Google has now updated Quick Share to keep transferring files using mobile data or Wi-Fi, even if the devices lose their direct connection.
You can see this makes it easier to share files without needing to stay near your phone the entire time. For large files, Wi-Fi is recommended, as mobile data can slow down or get costly on limited plans.
If you’ve been running the One UI 7.0 beta or got a Galaxy S25 Ultra with the stable build, you might already be familiar with the feature. We first spotted it in the One UI 7.0 beta 1 on the Galaxy S24 Ultra in December. Now, Google is rolling out a similar update across all Android devices.
Quick Share now works across Android devices, Chrome OS, and Windows, with potential future support for iOS. This update is part of Google Play Services version 25.04. It may take a few weeks for the rollout to reach all devices. So, keep an eye out for Google Play Services 25.04 to see the feature on your device.
