After an unexplained pause that stretched across several months, Google appears to have resumed rolling out Play System updates to Samsung Galaxy devices. Multiple Galaxy smartphones have recently picked up a new build. While it isn’t the latest February 2026 release, but rather January’s update, the rollout itself is a positive sign. Now that updates are flowing again, the February build should follow soon.

Galaxy devices get Google Play System updates again

Alongside Samsung’s firmware releases, Google independently pushes Google Play System updates to Galaxy devices. These updates enhance core Android components through the Play Store infrastructure, allowing Google to improve security, system modules, and essential services without requiring a full OS update from Samsung. They also occasionally add new features to critical Android services.

However, for the past several months, those updates appeared to be stalled on Galaxy devices. Most Samsung phones were stuck on the November 2025 release. Some devices were running a much older, July 2025 Play System version, raising concerns about delayed backend improvements. Now, the drought appears to be over.

We have received confirmation about the January 2026 Play System update rolling out to the Galaxy S24, S23, A54, and a few other models. The update should soon make it to more Galaxy smartphones and tablets. If your Galaxy device is still on an older version, it may be worth manually checking under: Settings > Security & Privacy > Updates > Google Play System update.

If you see an update, download it and restart your device when prompted to complete the installation. Unlike traditional firmware updates, Google Play System updates don’t require a full OS installation. They only take a minute or two. While these updates may not grab headlines, they play an essential role in keeping Galaxy devices secure and aligned with Google’s latest backend improvements. Keep checking for those at regular intervals.
