Google Play Store Update Flips the Switch on Galaxy XR Support

Samsung made a bold move with the launch of the Galaxy XR, which runs on the Android XR operating system. This sets the stage for future Android XR devices, all of which will have a ready-made content library at launch. Just like how you can find compatible apps for your tablet, smartwatch, TV, etc. the Play Store is making it easier to discover apps designed specifically for the XR headset.
Finally, Play Store has a place for XR-ready apps and games
First spotted by the folks over at Android Authority, the Google Play Store now includes a dedicated “XR headset” filter under Other devices. Selecting it shows all the apps and games currently compatible with the Galaxy XR. Right now, the Galaxy XR is the only Android XR headset, but as more XR devices launch, you can expect these apps and games to be ready for them from day one.
You can also open individual app listings (for example, Microsoft Word), scroll down to the ratings and reviews section, and you’ll find a dedicated category for the XR headset. It’s a neat touch, and you can even install apps on your Galaxy XR directly from your other Android devices.
While browsing, I also spotted a “Made for XR” badge on certain apps (such as MLB). Tapping it reveals: “This app was optimized for XR devices by the developer.” We haven’t yet tested how apps with the badge differ from those without it. But as the description suggests, it likely means better optimization and a few extra enhancements.
If you’re thinking about picking up the Galaxy XR, it’s priced at $1,799 and comes with a free Explorer Pack worth $1,140. You can also order prescription lenses if you wear glasses. Before you place your order, you might want to check out our unboxing. You can watch it below.
