Google Photos Testing Bulk Downloads, Revamped Onboarding Screen, and More

There’s a bunch of stuff coming soon to the Google Photos app for Android. We could see a number of additions, including the option to download multiple photos and videos, the ability to back up media using mobile data, and a few more, according to Android Authority. These features are in addition to the feature that lets you Ultra HDR-ify your old photos.

You could download multiple photos and videos on Google Photos in one go

Android Authority somehow managed to activate a hidden feature in Google Photos v7.26. It allows users to download multiple photos and videos at once on Google Photos. Currently, the app lets you select multiple images by tapping them individually, dragging to select, or using the date header’s select button. However, when you select multiple items on Google Photos, the Download button disappears. This is about to change. The Download button will now remain visible for bulk downloads.

The first time you use it, a warning about mobile data usage will appear, per report. Duplicate photos already on your device will be skipped. However, the feature doesn’t yet include a “select all” option or the ability to delay downloads until a Wi-Fi connection is available.

Google Photos may let you backup photos using mobile data soon, without pushing through settings

The same app version also introduces a revamped onboarding screen for new users or those setting up a new Android phone. The publication managed to activate this feature and shared some screenshots. The updated UI highlights the user’s profile photo and adds a toggle for using mobile data for backups. So you won’t have to dig through settings. It also informs users that photos and videos will be backed up in Original quality by default, though backup quality settings still need to be changed manually.

In addition, Google Photos may be planning a Mother’s Day surprise. The app will prompt users to “Create a Mother’s Day Memory.” Tapping the card will take you to the Create Video page, where you can either manually select photos or let the app auto-generate a video by choosing their mother’s face under “Select people & pets.” The final clip will include selected images and audio, ready to be shared. Since Mother’s Day falls on May 11 this year, the feature may go live around that time.
