Google May Have Accidentally Leaked Gemini’s ‘Circle Screen’ Feature

by | Apr 11, 2025 | News

You might already know how handy Circle to Search is, and now it’s rolling out to even more devices. For those unfamiliar, it lets you draw around anything on your screen, and Google will instantly pull up relevant search results. Now, a recent video posted by Google’s official Instagram account might have accidentally hinted at a new Circle Screen feature coming to Gemini.

Looks like Google is testing a new Circle Screen feature for Gemini

As spotted by Android Authority, the Instagram clip briefly shows a new in-development option in Gemini’s interface called “Circle Screen (DF).” The “DF” stands for DogFood, a term Google uses for features still being tested internally. This quick peek suggests that Google is toying with the idea of letting users circle a part of their screen and send it straight to Gemini for context-aware help. In other words, it’s Circle to Search, but with Gemini’s AI instead of the usual Google Search.

While Google hasn’t officially acknowledged the feature, the publication speculates on what it could offer. Circle Screen might let users highlight a specific part of their screen and send it to Gemini as visual context. That would be a big step up from Gemini’s current “Ask about screen” option, which grabs the entire screen as an attachment. By focusing only on the relevant area, Gemini could deliver more accurate responses without users needing to crop or edit anything themselves.

Right now, Circle to Search runs on Google Search, while Gemini uses its own AI infrastructure. If this new feature rolls out widely, users could end up with two similar tools for screen-based searching. One powered by Google Search and the other by Gemini. It’s still unclear whether Google plans to keep both or eventually combine them.

For now, this Circle Screen seems limited to internal testing and hasn’t shown up in public versions of the app. We’re pretty sure that we will learn more about the feature in the coming weeks, because Gemini has been rapidly evolving, adding a bunch of features every now and then.
