Google Maps now Requires sign-in to View Photos and Reviews
Google Maps is one of the most popular and widely used mobile apps. While primarily a navigation app, it goes far beyond that. A new update now brings an important change to the Google Maps experience. If you wanted to quickly check reviews for a new restaurant you’ve never visited or browse photos of a place you’re planning to try, you could’ve done that without signing in. Not anymore.
Google Maps requires you to sign in if you want to view photos or reviews
Reports on Reddit and other social platforms (via Android Headlines) confirm a new development on Google Maps. Users now see a sign-in prompt when trying to access photos or read reviews in a listing. Previously, this content was available even without logging into a Google account. If you’ve already signed in, nothing changes. However, signed-out users must now log in before browsing photos and reviews.
Photos and reviews are some of the most useful parts of Maps. They help you decide which restaurant to try, which service to trust, or whether that bakery is worth a stop. This change adds an extra step to one of the app’s most common workflows, and that’s going to annoy some people.
The update started rolling out recently and is gradually reaching more users around the world. Some users can still access photos and reviews without signing in, but it shouldn’t be long before Google enforces a sign-in for everyone. The company hasn’t officially explained the reason behind the change, but it could be tied to reducing spam, improving moderation, or encouraging account usage.
Will it improve overall quality? Maybe. But it also makes the app feel a bit more locked down than before. For now, casual browsing in Google Maps may require an extra step.
