Google Keep is getting ready for a design update with a Material 3 Expressive makeover. The app will redesign its Floating Action Button (FAB) to make it larger and more prominent. This change is currently hidden in the latest version of the app, so you won’t see it right away.

Google Keep’s Floating Action Button becomes bigger

For the uninitiated, Google Keep is a free note-taking app that lets users quickly capture ideas, create to-do lists, record voice notes, and more. Thanks to the Floating Action Button, you can start a new note with just a single tap. The button sits in the bottom corner of the screen and functions as a shortcut to create content. When you tap it, you see a host of options such as Text, List, Drawing, Image, and Audio.

Now, Google plans to refresh the look of the Floating Action Button. While digging through version 5.26.071.01 of Google Keep, folks over at Android Authority discovered the latest UI tweaks. As you can see in the video, the button retains the squircle shape with a plus sign, but now it appears larger and more noticeable on the screen. This makes it visually clearer as the main action in the app.

When you tap the button, the plus sign changes into a cross (×) symbol, opening the menu items as usual. However, the new UI also changes the button shape from a squircle to a circle. This transition should help users know that tapping it again will close the menu.

As mentioned above, the new design is not yet visible to regular users, but Google is working behind the scenes. We have already seen this makeover in apps like Google Docs and Google Drive, where the Floating Action Button was redesigned following the Material 3 Expressive style. Now, Google Keep is next in line for the same UI refresh. We’ll let you know when the company begins rolling out the changes.
