Samsung and Google maintain a solid relationship, with Gemini AI powering many of the AI features found on the latest Galaxy phones. In fact, Google first debuted Circle to Search on the Galaxy S24 series last year, and now Gemini’s live video and screen sharing features are coming to the Galaxy S25 series for free. However, Google is currently embroiled in an ongoing antitrust case brought by the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
Google testifies Samsung is exploring more AI options, not relying solely on Gemini
Now, during this legal battle, Google has revealed that Samsung isn’t only relying on Gemini AI anymore. Peter Fitzgerald, a Google executive, confirmed that Samsung is talking to other companies about adding their AI tools to Galaxy phones, Bloomberg reported. This lines up with earlier reports and shows that Samsung wants to explore more AI options, such as Perplexity.
This move could mean Galaxy users might soon get to choose from different AI apps, not just Google’s Gemini and Bixby. That might be a good thing, since different AIs offer different strengths. For example, some might be better for searching, while others might be better at summarizing or answering questions more naturally. Having more choices could make phones even smarter and more helpful. As a matter of fact, Perplexity AI is indeed better for researching web, but Gemini does a bunch of things better, thanks to system-wide integration.
For Google, this comes at a tough time. The DOJ is arguing that Google uses its power — and its money — to stay on top, especially in search. One part of this case claims Google pays Samsung a huge amount each month to have Gemini pre-installed. But Fitzgerald said those deals don’t stop Samsung from working with other AI companies too. The DOJ also apparently wants Google to sell off Chrome browser, and guess what, OpenAI wants to buy it already.
