Google Confirms Fix for Play System Update Issue on Android 16

If you are unable to install the latest Play system update on your device, you are not alone. Recently, several users running Android 16 (stable or beta version) have reported the same issue, which is concerning as the bug prevents devices from receiving the latest security improvements. Thankfully, Google is aware of the issue and will fix it in an upcoming update.
Play system “Failed to Update” bug hits Android 16 devices
Google’s Play system updates are important for Android device users. It keeps your device secure by pushing monthly patches — you don’t need to wait for a full system update. Furthermore, it introduces some new features and under-the-hood changes for an enhanced Android experience.

Unfortunately, a weird bug now shows a “Failed to update” error message when you try to install the latest Play system update. Even though you tap the “Try again” button, it does not fix the issue, leaving users stuck on an older patch level, such as May 1, 2025. The good news is that a fix is on the way through a future software update, though Google has not shared a specific timeline for its release.
In its Android community support page, a moderator wrote, “We are aware of an issue preventing some devices running Android 16 and Android 16 beta from installing the latest Google Play system update”. It shows the “Failed to update” error in Settings > Security & Privacy > System & updates > Google Play system update.
So far, there is no workaround for the bug, and even performing a factory reset might not fix the issue. So the only option is to wait for the next Google Play system update. Meanwhile, Google has started rolling out the July 2025 Play system update for several Galaxy devices. If you are running One UI 7 (Android 15), you should be able to install the latest patch without any issues.
