Google Confirms Chrome OS and Android Will Become a Single Platform

Over the past few months, rumors have been swirling that Google plans to merge Chrome OS into Android. A Google executive recently confirmed that the merger of the two platforms is indeed happening. The goal is to create a unified operating system across different product categories, likely to compete with Apple’s iPad.

In June 2024, Google announced that Chrome OS would use Android’s Linux kernel and frameworks to bring some similarities between the two operating systems. However, in late 2024, a report revealed that the Mountain View giant is working on a multi-year project to fully turn Chrome OS into Android. Instead of simply aligning the two platforms, Google is planning for deeper integration, leading to the phasing out of Chrome OS as a standalone system.

So far, there was no official confirmation of this broader transition — until recently. During a conversation with TechRadar, Sameer Samat, the president of the Android ecosystem at Google, was curious to know their use of an Apple Watch, iPhone, and MacBook. “I asked because we’re going to be combining Chrome OS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they’re getting done,” Samat said.

While the Google executive did not share any details about the merger, this is the first time someone from the company has publicly acknowledged it. The latest Android 16 offers a bunch of features for large-screen devices, such as desktop mode and windowing capabilities. This suggests that Google is moving closer to the merger and is preparing to shake up the tablet segment, where Chrome OS and Android have often overlapped.
