It’s been a while since Google made it clear that Gemini would eventually replace the Google Assistant across Android phones, tablets, and connected devices. And yes, that includes Galaxy devices, too. The company said at the time that most users would be moved over by the end of 2025. That plan has now changed, with Google confirming the transition will continue into 2026.

Google delays Gemini takeover of Assistant on Android until 2026

Google says it is adjusting the timeline to ensure a smoother experience as users are upgraded from Assistant to Gemini. While the company did not share a new deadline, it confirmed that the migration on mobile devices will no longer be completed this year. More information is expected in the coming months, which suggests the final switch may stretch beyond early 2026.

Once the transition is finished, Google Assistant will be fully retired on Android phones and tablets. Even more, the standalone Assistant app on iOS will also be discontinued. For now, Assistant remains available, and users can still switch back from Gemini inside the app. This includes newer devices where Gemini already ships as the default assistant, such as recent Pixel phones.

The delay is not entirely surprising. While Gemini has picked up many of Assistant’s core abilities, including smart home controls and voice actions, it is also meant to do far more. Google is trying to replace a command based assistant with an AI that can hold natural conversations, understand context, and interact deeply with apps and services. Making that work reliably across billions of devices is a massive challenge.

Gemini is already spreading beyond smartphones. Google has started rolling it out on Wear OS, Google TV, and Android Auto. There is also an early access program for Gemini on smart speakers and displays, though Assistant still powers most existing home devices. Hardware requirements may also slow things down, since devices need to meet minimum Android and memory standards. What do you think about this transition?
