Google Chrome is now testing a proper vertical tabs layout, giving us an early look at how the upcoming sidebar-style tab management might work. Other popular browsers have had this for years, and it finally looks like Google is adopting the design too. That means we may see this feature rolling out to Chrome on Galaxy Books in the near future.

Google tests new vertical tabs layout in Chrome Canary

Windows Report spotted Chrome Canary, the experimental version of Google Chrome, is now testing vertical tabs. Once the feature rolls out to the stable version, users can expect better multitasking and improved tab control, especially when managing a large number of tabs. Switching between tabs becomes faster, and overall tab organization feels more structured. If you use a desktop with a large monitor or a curved display, this layout makes excellent use of the extra screen real estate. For people with smaller screens, the traditional horizontal layout may still feel more comfortable, though that’s subjective.

Chrome’s Canary version now gives users the option to move tabs to the side. Once enabled, all your tabs are stacked vertically inside a sidebar. There’s a button to expand or collapse it, and the New Tab and Tab Group controls are placed neatly at the bottom. If you want to switch back to the default layout, simply click “Show tabs at the top.” You can enable this by right-clicking on the normal horizontal tab bar and selecting “Show tabs on the side.”

The feature is still a bit rough around the edges since it hasn’t been fully optimized yet. This feature needs a bit more refining, but that’s expected because Canary is a development and experimental version of Chrome. For context, Canary is where Google tests new features before moving them to the stable Chrome release.
