Google’s Aluminium OS to Bring Android to PCs With AI at the Core

It’s no secret that Google is developing a desktop Android platform by merging ChromeOS and Android. Now, we know the project carries the codename “Aluminium,” and it focuses on deeply integrating AI throughout the system. The company reportedly plans to launch the platform sometime in 2026.

While Android already powers a wide range of categories, including phones, tablets, smartwatches, and TVs, it has never had a true presence on traditional PCs. The PC market has been led by Windows and macOS, with Google’s Chrome OS in third place. Now, Aluminium OS is the Mountain View giant’s attempt to change that.

According to a job listing for a Senior Product Manager, Aluminium is described as a “new operating system built with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the core.” This suggests that Google will depend on its Gemini AI models to power key features across the system. The naming echoes the company’s use of metal-themed names like Chromium, the open-source version of ChromeOS.

The listing also reveals that the Senior Product Manager will be responsible for shaping a portfolio of “ChromeOS and Aluminium Operating System (ALOS) Commercial devices across all form factors (e.g., laptops, detachables, tablets, and boxes) and tiers (e.g., Chromebook, Chromebook Plus, AL Entry, AL Mass Premium, and AL Premium).” This suggests that the company doesn’t want to limit Aluminium OS to a single segment.

Furthermore, the listing hints at Google’s vision for the future of ChromeOS. One of the key responsibilities for the Senior Product Manager is to help develop a strategy for transitioning “Google from ChromeOS to Aluminium with business continuity in the future.” This suggests that the company will replace ChromeOS in favor of Aluminium OS in the future.

However, it’s unclear what Google plans to call the new platform when it officially launches. The company might either retain the ChromeOS branding or simply call it Android Desktop. We should learn about the final naming scheme in the coming months.
