Google’s Gemini is evolving fast, with the company regularly introducing new AI capabilities. It recently launched a new feature that lets you upload videos to Gemini for analysis. As of now, this function is rolling out through the latest Google app beta update and should reach the stable channel soon.

Google expands Gemini capabilities with video upload support

This comes as no surprise, as we already know Google has been working on video upload capability for the Gemini app. Finally, the Mountain View giant is ready to push this feature to a wider audience. Until now, you could only analyze documents, images, etc, but with the addition of the video upload feature, Gemini has become a truly multimodal AI assistant.

As spotted by 9to5Google, the latest Google app beta (version 16.23) enables video upload functionality within the Gemini app across Android and iOS. Note that this differs from the ability to analyze publicly available YouTube videos with Gemini, which was introduced a few weeks ago. Now you can directly upload your own video files to a prompt and ask AI to analyze the clip.

The feature works similarly to the document or image upload functionality. In a Gemini chat, you need to first open the “Plus” menu and choose Gallery or Files. Now select the video file you want to analyze for your query. The uploaded video will appear on a built-in video player, allowing you to replay it. Now you can type any question, such as what’s happening in this video.

The good news is that Google has not kept this feature behind a paywall — you can access it with both free and Pro accounts in the 2.5 Pro and 2.5 Flash versions of Gemini. However, right now, this feature has not reached the web platform — you will see a “File type unsupported” message in the prompt bar. We will let you know if that changes in the future.
