Galaxy Z Fold 7 Looks Sleek, But Its Battery Might Be a Step Back

by | May 7, 2025 | Galaxy Z, News

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 is shaping up to be a stunning piece of hardware: taller, wider, and thinner than ever. Leaks suggest the device will be just 8.9mm thick when folded and an eye-popping 3.9mm when unfolded. But while the company seems obsessed with trimming millimeters off the chassis, one major component remains unchanged — the battery — and that’s a concern.

Battery life is a concern for the Galaxy Z Fold 7

According to leaks and credible insiders, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will pack a 4,400mAh battery, the exact same capacity as its predecessor. That already raises eyebrows, as the Fold 6 isn’t incredible with its battery life. However, things look worse for the new model because it is physically bigger. The upcoming foldable is expected to sport a larger 8.2-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen.

But here’s the issue: all that screen real estate demands power. And if you’ve ever used a foldable like last year’s limited edition Galaxy Z Fold SE with similar dimensions, screen sizes, and the same battery capacity, you’ll know exactly what this means. Battery life on this foldable is passable, but far from impressive. Samsung seems to be taking that same formula global with the Fold 7, and we don’t like it.

Let’s be honest: thinness for the sake of thinness is overrated, especially on a foldable. Foldables are already chunky when closed and delicate when open. Shaving off fractions of a millimeter at the cost of real-world endurance just isn’t worth it. Most users would happily accept a few grams more and an extra millimeter in thickness if it meant more screen-on time, better thermal efficiency, and a battery that lasts a full day of use.

Samsung could surprise us with optimizations

All this said, Samsung’s engineering achievements with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 are quite impressive. Maybe the company will surprise us with optimizations. Note tipster Ice Universe recently said that the upcoming foldable will adopt new battery and charging technologies. Rumors have also pointed to more efficient displays, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite (3nm) processor brings efficiency gains of its own.

So, there’s still some hope that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will offer a better battery life than its predecessor. However, we believe most people wouldn’t mind if Samsung made the phone a little more bulky and included a 5,000mAh or larger battery. Stick around for the official launch in a couple of months. Samsung’s 2025 foldable lineup is expected to debut in the first half of July, including the Galaxy Z Flip 7.
