It’s been a few years since the original Galaxy Fold debuted — launched in February 2019, followed by a market release in September 2019. And it’s safe to say that Samsung has come a long way over the past six to seven years. You’ll understand what point we’re trying to make when you compare the first Fold against the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7. It finally feels like Samsung’s foldables have crossed the mainstream threshold.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 turns out to be a blockbuster

According to Samsung, pre-orders for the new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 are up more than 25 percent compared to last year in the US. In fact, the new foldables also had their huge moments in India, South Korea, and many other major markets. The company says that it’s so far the strongest demand for a foldable ever.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is leading the charge, racking up more pre-orders than any previous Fold model in US history. Carrier partners reported nearly a 60 percent jump in combined pre-orders for both devices year over year. And since launch day on July 25, momentum hasn’t slowed. Samsung says the Fold 7 is outselling its predecessor by almost 50 percent.

But what’s driving the demand? Samsung points to thinner, lighter hardware, stronger hinge and screen durability, and upgrades to AI-powered features and cameras. In-store hands-on time seems to be a major factor as well, with the company noting that customers are more likely to commit after trying the devices in person.

“Foldables have reached an inflection point…” says Drew Blackard, Samsung America’s SVP of Mobile Product Management. “Now on our 7th generation, we’ve addressed consumer feedback year after year and have arrived at the kind of experience you can’t get on any other device. When people go hands-on with a Z series device, they’re hooked — and now it’s all coming together with record-breaking numbers.”

If you still haven’t gotten the Galaxy Z Fold 7, you can check out the latest offers. With eligible trade-ins, Samsung lets you lower the price to as low as $999.99 for the 256GB variant.
