Samsung’s foldable smartphones are in for massive upgrades this year, particularly the Fold model. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be substantially thinner and bigger than the Fold 6. It may also be more durable thanks to stronger internal structure, including a new hinge mechanism. The Galaxy Z Flip 7, meanwhile, might finally adopt CoE display technology for efficiency improvements.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a more durable hinge with better dust protection
One of the biggest challenges for foldable smartphones has been hinge durability and dust resistance. With the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung is reportedly introducing an all-new hinge design that enhances structural integrity while improving long-term reliability. It also incorporates new dust-protective brushes along the hinge to block dust and debris from entering the phone’s body.
These enhancements should lead to fewer hinge-related issues and a smoother folding experience, improving the overall durability. At a reported thickness of just 4.5mm when unfolded and 9.5mm when folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is incredibly slim. It has a wider profile, allowing for an 8.2-inch inner folding display and a 6.5-inch cover display. There is no word on its weight yet.
While the Galaxy Z Flip 7 doesn’t get similar design enhancements, it may bring many functional upgrades. It also has larger screens, with Samsung finally introducing CoE (Color-on-Encapsulation) technology to the Flip lineup, making the display more efficient and reducing power consumption. The Fold series has featured CoE since the Fold 3, so it’s a nice little upgrade for the clamshell foldable.
With these enhancements, Samsung is reinforcing its leadership in the foldable market by addressing durability concerns, improving energy efficiency, and refining the user experience. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 are shaping up to be Samsung’s most advanced foldables yet, setting a new benchmark for toughness and performance. The devices should go official in July this year.
