The Galaxy Z Fold 7 may be a true generational leap, but what about the Flip? While the Galaxy Z Flip 7 brings meaningful improvements over last year’s Flip 6, its upgrades aren’t quite as dramatic. If you’re already using the Flip 6, you’re probably wondering: Is the Flip 7 worth the upgrade? In this comparison, we break down everything that’s new — from the hinge and cover screen to performance and software — to help you decide.

Design and Build: A big leap in look and feel

In terms of design, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 can be called a generational leap. It may not be super slim like the Fold 7, but Samsung has managed to slim it down a little while offering a bigger battery and larger screens. It features a new 6.9-inch foldable screen (up from 6.7 inches) and an edge-to-edge 4.1-inch cover display that wraps around the camera module. The Flip 6 has a folder-shaped 3.4-inch cover screen.

Despite the size bump, the new model is actually thinner than its predecessor (6.5mm vs 6.9mm, when unfolded) and weighs about the same. The full dimensions are as follows:

  • Galaxy Z Flip 6:
    • Folded: 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm
    • Unfolded: 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm
    • Weight: 187g
  • Galaxy Z Flip 7:
    • Folded: 85.5 x 75.2 x 13.7 mm
    • Unfolded: 166.7 x 75.2 x 6.5 mm
    • Weight: 188g

The all-new Armor FlexHinge is more compact and sturdier. It also makes the crease on the inner display less noticeable — a long-standing complaint among Flip users. There’s no change to the IP48 dust and water resistance, aluminum frame, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 at the back. Still, in terms of looks, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 feels like a next-gen device, not just a yearly refresh.

Displays: More screen with notable upgrades on the Galaxy Z Flip 7

On paper, the specs for the main display aren’t dramatically different — both are LTPO AMOLED panels with 1–120Hz refresh and 2,600 nits peak brightness. But the Flip 7 gets a larger 6.9-inch panel and a far more usable 4.1-inch outer screen. Samsung has upgraded it to a 120Hz refresh rate and 2,600 nits brightness for a consistent experience across both screens. You can now use more apps and AI features on the cover screen.

Performance: First Exynos-powered foldable doesn’t disappoint

We have yet to push the Galaxy Z Flip 7 to its limits, but its early impressions are solid. The phone holds up well in regular usage, so Samsung’s decision to equip it with its in-house 3nm Exynos 2500 chipset may not backfire. For a quick comparison, this Exynos chip has a peak frequency of 3.3GHz, while the Flip 6’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (4nm) runs at 3.4GHz. Both models pack 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

Overall, we expect a comparable performance between the two models (wait for our in-depth review of the Flip 7). Note that the new model boasts Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth v5.3 instead of Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth v5.3, so that’s an advantage. It’s more future-proof, though Flip 6 users shouldn’t be worried about it. Also, Samsung DeX support finally arrives on the Flip 7 — both wired and wireless. It’s the first Flip to offer this desktop-like experience.

Camera: Exact same hardware

When it comes to the camera, there’s no separating the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Flip 6. They boast the exact same hardware, so it all boils down to Samsung’s optimization, AI power, software processing, and the ISP. For the most part, it should be the same story, barring the ISP. The two Flips are powered by separate chipsets, so their camera processing should be different. This is easily the least exciting part for anyone already using a Flip 6.

Battery and charging: A big boost despite a slimmer profile

Despite a slimmer profile, Samsung managed to squeeze in a larger 4,300mAh battery (vs 4,000mAh) inside the Galaxy Z Flip 7. That, along with the efficiency gains from the 3nm Exynos 2500 chip (hopefully, it is as efficient as Samsung claims it to be), could mean better efficiency and battery life, even though real-world tests are still pending.

The charging speed remains unchanged at 25W wired and 15W wireless. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is Qi2-ready, meaning that you can attach magnetic accessories with compatible magnetic cases. The device itself lacks built-in agents, so it only works with cases.

Software: A major head start, but nothing too significant

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 ships with One UI 8 based on Android 16, two versions ahead of the Flip 6’s Android 14-based One UI 6.1.1. Both will get seven years of software support, but the Flip 7 will be supported through Android 23, compared to Android 21 for the Flip 6. However, with five more big updates remaining, the 2024 model has plenty of life left in it.

Should you make the switch?

While it is an outright “yes” for the Fold 6 users looking to upgrade to the Fold 7, Flip 6 users should evaluate their needs. Bigger screens are nice, but not absolute gamechangers. The camera is the same, and we do not expect a major leap in performance. The battery life is surely a massive advantage, and so is the refined design that looks more premium.

So, if you value design and future-proof features like DeX and Android support, you might want to upgrade from your Galaxy Z Flip 6 to Flip 7. Otherwise, you might be okay holding out another year. Don’t forget to check out Samsung’s aggressive trade-in deals, though. Maybe you can score a Flip 7 for far less than its actual price of $1,099.
