Galaxy S27 Ultra May Finally Ditch LPDDR5X for LPDDR6 Memory

Leaks are already piling up for the next-gen Galaxy S27 Ultra, even though it’s still nearly a year away from hitting stores. A few details have surfaced so far, including a claim that the S27 Ultra could run on the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.
Qualcomm may launch two flagship-tier mobile processors this year: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 (SM8950) and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975). Some key specifications for both chips leaked recently. One small detail that may have gone unnoticed was pointed out by eagle-eyed tipster Ronald Quandt.
Galaxy S27 Ultra could finally adopt LPDDR6 after years of LPDDR5X
Based on the leaked specs, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will support both LPDDR5X and LPDDR6 memory. That makes it plausible that the Galaxy S27 Ultra could finally adopt LPDDR6 RAM, which would be a meaningful upgrade. Samsung has used LPDDR5X since the Galaxy S23 and first introduced it in late 2021.
Put simply, Samsung may be getting ready to switch to a newer, faster type of RAM in its next Ultra phone. The Galaxy S23, S24, S25, and S26 series all use LPDDR5X, which is still fast but starting to show its age.
LPDDR6 could bring faster data speeds, better efficiency, and improved multitasking. Apps could open quicker, switching between tasks would feel smoother, and overall performance could see a noticeable boost without impacting battery life as much.
That said, it’s still too early to say any of this is certain. Still, given the source of the rumor, there’s a good chance the Galaxy S27 Ultra could move beyond LPDDR5X and adopt LPDDR6. The bigger question is pricing. If the upgrade pushes costs up, especially with rumors that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro could be expensive, the phone itself might not come cheap.
