For a moment, it might seem a little funny that we’re already talking about the Galaxy S27 Ultra when the Galaxy S26 Ultra is still more than two and a half months away. But that’s just how leaks and rumors go. It appears that Samsung may be planning a major upgrade to the facial recognition system for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

Much-needed facial recognition upgrade likely won’t arrive before the Galaxy S27 Ultra

This claim comes from @SPYGO19726 on X, who has been quite vocal about several leaks lately. According to the source, Samsung is testing something called “Polar ID v1.0”. This could represent a new approach to biometric security. In simpler terms, it might outperform the basic 2D camera scan currently used on Galaxy phones.

More specifically, the leaker says the information comes from early test firmware for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, which contains references to Polar ID within Samsung’s biometric security framework. They explain it as a polarized-light authentication system linked to the front ISOCELL Vizion sensor and a secure enclave routine known as BIO-Fusion Core.

If true, this would mark a major shift away from the IR-based face unlock system used in current Galaxy devices. Instead of projecting infrared dots to map a face, the rumored system would rely on polarized light patterns to read a unique “signature” of the user’s skin. In theory, that could make it far more difficult to deceive with photos or 3D masks.

The leak also claims that Samsung is targeting an unlock speed of around 180 milliseconds, which seems fast enough to compete with today’s quickest biometric systems. Of course, it’s still early. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is at least a year and a half away, and Samsung is likely testing several hardware prototypes before making any final decisions.

As with any leak, it’s wise to take this with a grain of salt. Still, if it turns out to be accurate, Samsung could finally close the gap with Apple’s Face ID, which is often regarded as the best in the industry. And I’d agree with that assessment.
