Galaxy S22 and S21 Phones Grab Samsung’s May 2025 Update

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 flagships are receiving the May 2025 security update. The latest security patch is rolling out to these devices in select markets across Asia. A global rollout may begin in the coming days. While the Galaxy S22 series will get One UI 8 later this year, Samsung is done with feature updates for the S21 trio.
May update available for the Galaxy S22 and S21 series
The May security update, aka Security Maintenance Release (SMR), addresses nearly 80 vulnerabilities across Samsung’s Android products, including Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Most of those patches are released by Google and address Android OS flaws, though some 20-odd fixes are specific to Galaxy devices. Patched by Samsung, these flaws do not exist in Android devices from other brands.
The Korean firm has already rolled out the May SMR for a bunch of flagship and budget models. The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 lineups joined the party recently, with the rollout beginning in Asia. The new firmware build number for the 2022 flagship trio is FYE3, while that for the S21 trio is HYE1.
Unsurprisingly, this update doesn’t bring anything more than the May security patch to the Galaxy S22 and S21 phones. Both lineups recently received One UI 7 with tons of new features and enhancements. The latest release focuses on the security side of things. You can check for updates from Settings > Software update > Download and install.
As mentioned above, the Galaxy S22 series will receive One UI 8 later this year. It will be the final major OS update for the phones. The Galaxy S21 series, meanwhile, has already received its four major OS upgrades and is no longer eligible for big feature releases. The 2021 Samsung flagships will soon stop getting security patches as well. Users should upgrade to a newer model to receive the latest features and security updates.
