The Galaxy Home smart speaker has finally been unboxed, nearly seven years after it was first announced. Originally teased at the 2018 Galaxy Unpacked event, it was meant to compete with other premium smart speakers and offer deep Bixby integration. Unlike the Galaxy Home Mini, however, it never made it to retail shelves.

A recent YouTube video from Amir Hojaiji gives the first full look at the Galaxy Home outside of Samsung. The speaker comes in a sleek box with protective foam and a user manual. It features a mesh exterior, three metal legs, and a touch panel on top for playback, volume control, and muting the microphone.

Once paired through the SmartThings app, the Galaxy Home offers multiple audio modes. Its standout feature, Sound Steer, directs audio toward the listener’s position, ensuring the best sound anywhere in the room. The speaker also doubles as a SmartThings hub, letting users control smart lights, locks, thermostats, and more. It can set alarms, timers, and reminders, and even make hands-free phone calls.

Most of the things still seem nice

Many of the smart features, including Bixby’s voice commands, capsules, and personalization options, are currently offline due to server issues. Despite this, the Galaxy Home works perfectly as a high-quality Bluetooth speaker. Audio quality is impressive, with clear, room-filling sound that rivals Samsung’s Level line of audio products.

The unboxing shows the Galaxy Home’s premium build and careful design, from the intuitive touch controls to the vented subwoofer at the base. Features like quick commands, conversation history, and announcements add to its functionality, while night mode dims the display and lowers volume at set times. Convenient, right.

The Galaxy Home remains one of the rarest and most mysterious devices in Samsung’s history. This unboxing satisfies years of curiosity while showing what could have been a flagship smart speaker in the Galaxy ecosystem. The question is, why did Samsung never officially release it? In fact, it actually looks good, especially considering it was announced in 2018.
