Exclusive: SmartThings May Soon Let You Create Routines with ChatGPT

Samsung is quietly working on a powerful new feature within the SmartThings app: AI-generated routines. We previously covered a recent SmartThings update with features such as improved routines and Map View integration. But now, we’ve uncovered something even more exciting; a hidden feature that reveals Samsung’s plans to enable routine creation in SmartThings using AI models such as ChatGPT. While the ChatGPT integration isn’t fully operational yet, we managed to test the feature using another option.
Creating routines with AI simplifies automation
Setting up routines in SmartThings can be daunting for many users. What triggers should you use? Which devices should you link together? This new ChatGPT integration in SmartThings promises a smoother experience. Simply provide a short prompt, and the AI generates a suggested routine. For example: “When I get home, turn on the lights, set the thermostat to 21 degrees, and start Netflix.” Yes, as simple as that, you can write commands in plain English.
In our testing, the feature worked reasonably well with simple prompts. However, complex or lengthy inputs still pose a challenge. The generated routines aren’t yet perfectly done but serve as a strong starting point. This will especially help users who are new to automation and need guidance on how to begin.
Not official yet, but possibly coming with One UI 8
These AI routines haven’t been officially announced and are clearly in an experimental phase. Samsung appears to be testing multiple AI models, including both local LLMs and external platforms like ChatGPT, for SmartThings. We expect the feature could launch later this year, or maybe alongside One UI 8.
If rolled out globally, this feature could mark a major leap toward smarter and more personalized automation. By using natural language to build routines, SmartThings will become more accessible and user-friendly. We’ll be watching closely to see when (or if) Samsung makes it official.
