The update introduces a machine learning model that runs directly on Android devices, according to Google. This is powered by Gemini, and is trained on real and synthetic data collected from a wide range of websites. By running locally on the phone, Chrome can process suspicious activity faster and more privately, without sending user data to external servers.
When Chrome detects a potentially harmful notification, users will see a warning with the site’s name and a caution icon. Chrome will then give two options: unsubscribe from notifications or view the message anyway. This gives users more control while offering better protection against deceptive websites.
This Gemini-backed protection is part of Google’s broader efforts to improve online safety across its platforms. Chrome on desktop already uses Gemini Nano in Enhanced Protection mode to detect tech support scams and other risky content. Google says similar protections could expand to Android in the future.
Last year, Google also updated Chrome’s Safety Check tool on Android to scan for compromised passwords, harmful browser extensions, and outdated software. This latest update continues the push to make Chrome a safer, smarter browser across both mobile and desktop.
