Google continues to protect Android users from scams and other online threats through advanced security features. The company has now launched in-call scam protection in the US. This new feature helps users stay safe from financial scams while screen-sharing during a call.

Android improves protection against financial scams with in-call warnings

In recent years, scammers have become more clever. They now use advanced tricks to lead people to malicious websites, reveal sensitive information, send funds, or download harmful apps. This includes pretending to be banks or trusted companies and tricking people into sharing their screen so they can see their banking details.

Android’s security tool can already detect scams and protect users across phone calls, text messages, and messaging app chat notifications. Now, the new in-call scam protection adds another layer of safety by warning users during screen-sharing on a call.

Google first tested the feature in the UK, helping thousands of people avoid losing money. The company later expanded the pilot program to Brazil and India, and is now bringing it to the US with partners like Cash App and JPMorganChase. If you live in the US and own a compatible device (Android 11 or later), you should install the latest version of the participating financial app to receive the protection.

Now, when a user is on a call with an unknown number, sharing their screen, and opening a participating financial app, Android automatically displays a warning. The alert explains the potential dangers and gives you the option to end the call and to stop screen sharing with just one tap.

Furthermore, it includes a 30-second pause before letting the user continue. This gives the user time to think clearly, breaking the pressure that scammers usually use to trick people. Google now plans to bring these critical safeguards to even more users in the future.
