We know that LLMs are really good at summarizing stuff, which opens the door to endless possibilities. But perfection’s not here yet. Apple tried using AI to summarize notifications in iOS 18, but it’s not going very well. That’s probably what Google wants to avoid with its own notification summaries.

Google is taking some important notes before shipping notification summaries

We first heard Google was working on this back in March. Now, there’s progress. It appeared in the latest Android 16 beta, with a short animation in the July 2025 Canary build showing how it works, according to Android Authority.

The feature provides quick summaries of “conversation notifications” which are messages from chats or group messages. These already appear in a special section of the notification panel and sometimes as floating bubbles. Unlike Apple’s similar tool in iOS, which can summarize news alerts or promotions, Android’s version focuses only on messages. This helps avoid the confusing or inaccurate summaries seen with Apple’s tool.

The summaries are AI-generated, but Google notes these notifications won’t always be perfect. Notifications will only be summarized if they contain between 25 and 200 words, and summaries won’t appear immediately. Android waits three minutes before generating them, likely to avoid interrupting users while they read. Users are also limited to 50 summaries per day.

Summaries appear only when a conversation notification is collapsed and take up to three lines in italics, with a special icon indicating the summary. When expanded, the full message remains visible.

This feature relies on Google’s on-device AI model, Gemini Nano, so it won’t be available on every phone. It is expected to launch first on the upcoming Pixel 10 and later roll out to other Gemini Nano-supported devices like the Pixel 8 and 9.

There’s no release date yet, as Mishaal Rahman notes at Android Authority. Once live, you should be able to manage or disable summaries for specific apps under Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries > Manage apps.
