A Journalist With 1,800 Phones Flew to Korea for Galaxy Z TriFold

For most people, buying a new smartphone is as simple as placing an online order or picking one up at a local store. However, recently, Yasuhiro Yamane, a Japanese IT journalist who owns more than 1,800 phones, flew to South Korea to purchase Samsung’s first multi-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold. The Korean firm spoke with Yamane to learn about his first impressions and hands-on experience.
Yasuhiro Yamane calls Galaxy Z TriFold an entirely new kind of device
Based in Hong Kong, Yamane has covered smartphones and telecommunications for more than 20 years. He describes himself as a “mobile phone researcher,” reflecting his passion and deep curiosity about mobile technology. Yamane said Samsung’s foldable lineup stands out for its display technology and foldable-optimized user interface, praising split-screen and multitasking capabilities.
“When I heard that Samsung, a leader in the foldable market, was introducing a unique multi-folding form factor — Galaxy Z TriFold — I believed it would open up new possibilities unlike anything we had seen before. Eager to try it before anyone else, I traveled to Korea to purchase the device”, said the journalist.

When Yamane first held the Galaxy Z TriFold, he felt it was “an entirely new kind of device” that sits between a smartphone and a tablet. He said the phone felt more polished and had better build quality than other smartphones. While the journalist first worried about its thickness and weight, the device felt slim and comfortable when unfolded.
Furthermore, Yamane said the device’s large 10-inch main screen offers solid productivity and multitasking. For example, the device can run three apps at once, such as email, maps, and PDF files. It is also great for entertainment, as unfolding it instantly offers an immersive viewing experience anywhere.
Yamane also highlighted that the Galaxy Z TriFold’s use case is in a vertical position. He said this setup works well even in crowded places like subways. When paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, the device lets users write while researching at the same time. Likewise, Samsung DeX further improves productivity in a work environment.
