Apple Plans to Put AI Cameras on AirPods — What Do You Have, Samsung?

Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce its next AirPods model with built-in AI-powered cameras. This could allow the Cupertino giant to offer more cutting-edge wireless earbuds compared to those from its rival, Samsung. The company may debut this model this year, bringing the evolution of smart audio wearables.
Apple aims to boost AI with built-in cameras on AirPods
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is ramping up development on a new pair of AirPods that feature cameras. However, these are lower-resolution sensors designed to power AI-related tasks rather than take photos or videos. The idea is to help AI understand the outside world and offer useful information to the user in real time.
Reports suggest Apple’s upcoming second model of AirPods Pro 3 will likely come with built-in cameras. While the new model may offer a similar look and audio performance as the current AirPods Pro 3, AI-focused hardware could be its key upgrade. As such, the company could debut the earbuds at a higher price point. There’s also chatter that the model may not feature pressure-sensitive buttons on ear stems to enable hand gestures.
Meanwhile, Samsung currently has no plans to bring cameras to its Galaxy Buds lineup. However, in response to Apple’s efforts in AI-powered wearables, the company may follow a similar path. For now, the Korean firm is focusing on improving practicality and usability in its upcoming Galaxy Buds 4 series, which debuts on February 25, 2025.
For example, the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro’s Interpreter Mode (which enables real-time, two-way language translation) will reportedly trigger from the earbuds by pinching and holding both stems. Likewise, users could be able to manage calls or notifications with simple nods or shakes of the head, making hands-free interaction seamless. The case will also feature a dedicated physical button to help you locate the connected phone easily.
