Android 17 May Unlock the Full Potential of Galaxy Z Fold and Z TriFold

Even though Google delayed Android 17 Beta 1 today, this update won’t be small. In fact, it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest Android releases in years. It brings camera and media upgrades and performance improvements. But most importantly, it is finally giving foldables and large screens some love. This new change is especially targeted for Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z TriFold users.
Here’s why Android 17 matters for Galaxy Z Fold and Z TriFold
Google is finally treating foldables like proper big-screen devices instead of stretched-out phones, a long-time pain point for the foldable ecosystem. As folks over at PhoneArena noe, instead of forcing apps to just stretch to fill the space, Android 17 pushes better adaptive layouts. Additionally, it brings improved window behaviours for apps targeting SDK level 37.
In simple terms, apps will use the main foldable display more intelligently. That means fewer awkward phone-sized layouts on the inner screen, smoother split-screen and multi-window performance, and stronger large-screen support from developers going forward.
Samsung has already led the foldable software experience with One UI features like Taskbar, Multi-Active Window, and refined split-screen tools. It even lets users force unsupported apps to do Split Screen or Multi Window via Labs in Settings. Android 17 now strengthens the foundation underneath those features, which should make the overall experience more consistent and seamless once Samsung integrates the update into One UI.
With Google improving large-screen app behavior at the system level, the Galaxy Z Fold lineup stands to benefit the most. Combined with Samsung’s software polish, Android 17 (One UI 9) could finally make the foldable experience feel fully optimized for that expansive inner display, not just adjusted to fit it. And just so you know, Samsung has already started testing Android 17-based One UI 9 for 2026 foldables as well as Galaxy Z Fold 7.
