Update 02/04 2PM ET: Following yesterday’s deep dive by Android Authority, Google has now officially confirmed that it’s coming. “Speech translation will roll out to the Meet Android and iOS apps in the coming months,” the company wrote on Wednesday.

At Google I/O 2025, the company announced several major additions. One of them was live speech translation in Google Meet, which lets participants hear translated audio during meetings. It later rolled out, but it’s limited to desktop users and locked behind paid AI and business subscriptions.

Google Meet’s live translation feature is one step closer to hit Android

Now, Android Authority reports that there’s evidence Google is exploring live translation support for Meet on Android. While digging through a beta build of Google Meet for Android, the publication spotted references to a new “speech translation” setting. The mention shows up in version 344.0.861071534.public_beta.duo.android_20260126.01_p0 of the app.

The option isn’t visible to users by default and doesn’t actually do anything yet. There’s no interface, no language selection, and no sign it can be turned on during live meetings. Still, its presence suggests Google is laying the groundwork for bringing live translation to phones.

This isn’t new territory for Google. Pixel phones as well as Samsung flagships already offer real-time call translation, so the hardware can clearly handle live language processing.

For now, most of the details around the Android version remain unclear. It’s hard to say whether it’ll be restricted to certain devices, locked behind a paywall, or how many languages it might support at launch. If everything stays on track, Google will likely share more in the coming weeks.

It will be one heck of an upgrade when it finally lands on Android phones. A lot of us are already used to taking meetings on more portable devices like foldables and tablets, many of which run Android. In professional settings, that makes live translation a much-needed feature.
