T-Mobile Can Increase These Fees Anytime — and Just Did

T-Mobile has announced its first fee increase of the year, but not through a change to its base plan prices. The US carrier has quietly increased its Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee, which will come into effect on January 21, 2026. This fee applies to both voice and mobile internet lines.
T-Mobile announces increase to Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee
For the uninitiated, Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee is not a government tax. It is a charge that T-Mobile adds to monthly bills to help cover certain costs. The Regulatory Programs part helps pay for funding and compliance with government mandates, programs, and obligations. Meanwhile, the Telco Recovery part helps cover the costs T-Mobile pays to other carriers for delivering calls and for network facilities, operations, and services.
In April 2025, T-Mobile increased this fee by $0.50 per line, and now it’s raising it again by $0.50 per line. This means that within less than a year, the fee is now a full $1.00 per line higher per month. Starting January 21, 2026, the fee for voice lines will hike from $3.99 to $4.49 per line per month. As for mobile internet lines, the fee will increase from $1.60 to $2.10 per line per month.
The increase has sparked customer frustration, mainly since T-Mobile advertises price locks on its plans. Stetson Doggett, who discusses cell phone plans, expressed disappointment on X. They wrote, “But to me it feels disingenuous to advertise a 5-year price lock when T-Mobile CAN LITERALLY CHANGE ITS MADE UP FEE AT ANY TIME.”
While it feels like price lock will keep their total bill constant, it only applies to the monthly price for on-network talk, text, and 5G data. Exclusions, such as taxes and fees, apply, so it does not cover charges like the Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee. Simply put, even though your plan price could remain the same, your total monthly bill can go up. Not cool, T-Mobile!
