Samsung Ends Up Carrying More of Apple’s iPhone RAM Load

It looks like Apple will lean more heavily on Samsung for iPhone memory over the next two years. This says a lot about where the global memory market is heading. As RAM prices surge and supplies tighten, Samsung is emerging as Apple’s most reliable partner for large-scale iPhone production, starting with the iPhone 17 series.

Korean media reports that Samsung is on track to supply roughly 60 to 70 percent of the low-power DRAM used in iPhones. If anything, it’s a notable jump compared to previous generations, where Samsung and SK Hynix were believed to have fairly balanced shares, with Micron contributing smaller volumes. This shift also reportedly extends to Apple’s 2026 lineup. Or in other words, the iPhone 18 series.

The reasons are mostly structural. iPhones rely on LPDDR memory, which prioritizes power efficiency and thermal stability. While Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron all manufacture LPDDR at scale, the market has changed fast. The AI boom has pushed demand for HBM through the roof, and suppliers are naturally chasing those margins. SK Hynix and Micron have increasingly redirected capacity toward HMB, leaving less room for mobile DRAM.

Samsung has taken a more balanced approach. Even as it ramps up HBM production for major customers, it has continued to invest heavily in mobile and general-purpose DRAM. That makes Samsung uniquely positioned to meet Apple’s need for massive, predictable volumes without cutting corners on quality.

Moreover, Apple also enforces standards that go beyond JEDEC guidelines, especially around consistency. Memory modules need to perform almost identically across hundreds of millions of devices. This is particularly critical with newer chips like the A19 and A19 Pro, which are said to be sensitive to brief voltage fluctuations. Few suppliers can meet those requirements at Apple’s scale, and Samsung appears to be one of them.
