Samsung has begun rolling out the December 2025 security update, which includes patches for more than five dozen vulnerabilities. However, beyond OEM updates (in this case, from Samsung), Android devices also receive protection through Google Play system updates. These updates are separate from those delivered by device makers. At the moment, several Galaxy phones are experiencing issues with Google Play system updates.

Google Play system updates have hit a roadblock on Galaxy phones

As highlighted by folks over at GalaxyClub, most Galaxy devices haven’t received a Google Play system update since August (or even July, in some cases). When you think about it, that means they haven’t gotten a newer Google Play system update in over six months, which is frankly not okay at all.

Some newer devices, however, such as the Galaxy S25 series, have received an update to September. Even so, that update is now at least three months old when you put it into perspective. I can also see that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is running the September Play system update, while the Galaxy A55 is still stuck on July, sadly. And that’s not an old phone by any means, considering it’s just one generation old.

If there’s anyone to blame here, it’s Google and not Samsung. Samsung, as mentioned above, has been steadily rolling out the December 2025 security update. The list of supported devices is constantly expanding, and a wide range of models across the lineup, whether entry-level, rugged, or flagship, have already picked up these updates.

Hopefully, Google will find a solution to this issue soon so users won’t have to wait much longer. Samsung has also completed the One UI 8 rollout, and all eligible devices have started receiving the update. If it still hasn’t arrived on your Galaxy device, that’s likely due to your region. Ideally, Google should now continue Play system updates for all Galaxy devices.
