Google is preparing big changes to how Android users install third-party app stores on their devices. The company will introduce support for “Registered App Stores” with Android 17. It will make installing and using alternative app stores on the mobile OS much easier and user-friendly.

Google will introduce “Registered App Stores” in Android 17

The new feature is likely the result of Google’s recent proposed settlement with Epic Games. “Together with Epic Games we have filed a proposed set of changes to Android and Google Play that focus on expanding developer choice and flexibility, lowering fees, and encouraging more competition all while keeping users safe,” said Sameer Samat, Google’s President of Android Ecosystem.

If Google certifies a third-party app store as a “Registered App Store,” it likely means the company has verified the platform. Starting with Android 17, the company will allow users to install a registered store from a website with a single install screen. The screen will use neutral language to explain the installation, clarifying the required permissions.

As you can see in the image, Google will guide users through the installation of a registered app store in three simple steps. First, when users visit the store’s website, they will see a clear download button, along with featured and popular apps to explore.

Now, coming to the second step, users will see a banner explaining that this is a registered app store. It will also tell users that installing the store will let it install and manage apps on the device. The screen will also provide links to the store’s Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Trust & Safety policies, and Customer Support, so users can access all the necessary information before proceeding. Finally, the confirmation screen thanks the user for downloading the store while allowing them to open it directly.
