While some of you are still waiting for the One UI 8 update, Samsung is already going all in on the next big release, the One UI 8.5. Earlier reports suggested that a beta program could launch this month. However, those plans have now been delayed. So far, we’ve already had a look at a fair share of the upcoming features. Among many, One UI 8.5 may also include notification summaries as well as notification prioritization. Now, more details have emerged.

The notification data might only be processed on-device, and that’s both good and bad

Folks over at Android Authority have found more references to the upcoming notification summaries and notification prioritization features in One UI 8.5. One of these mentions that the data will be processed on-device, which isn’t actually new since we’ve already seen those screenshots. However, there are some important details, including the fact that the feature will create short summaries of notifications received in the last 24 hours.

Also, the fact that Samsung will ensure these are handled on-device and not in the cloud is actually a good move. This will make the feature more private and secure. On-device processing means the chipset should be capable of handling these tasks, which is why it could remain exclusive to flagships. Samsung will probably use the Galaxy AI framework, which already powers live translation and note summarization, to manage this, the report adds.

Which languages could One UI 8.5’s notification summaries support at launch?

Now comes the most important part: One UI 8.5’s notification summaries might only be available in select languages at launch. Samsung might have plans to add more languages down the line, but not just yet. In related news, Samsung recently added support for two more languages to Galaxy AI. Now, let’s take a look at which languages could be supported first:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Hindi
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Simplified Chinese (Mainland China)
  • Thai
  • Vietnamese

Additionally, the report reveals that despite supporting all these languages at launch, your Galaxy device might only process one active language at a time, specifically the one set as the system’s primary language. As a result, users who switch between multiple languages may not receive summaries for all of their notifications. So, if you’re multilingual, you’re out of luck for now.
