Samsung aims to push the boundaries of future communication technology through its advanced solutions. The company is reportedly developing an AI modem chip for satellite operators, particularly for SpaceX. If successful, this technology could reshape the current communications industry.

Samsung is developing a new AI modem for satellite communications

According to a report from Hankyung, an executive from Samsung’s DS (Device Solutions) Division recently met with SpaceX. They discussed the progress of the AI modem chip’s development. The AI modem will directly connect low-orbit satellites to terminals. Analysts say the market for this groundbreaking technology could increase to 740 trillion won by 2040.

The Korean firm’s System LSI Division recently gave a presentation about the modem. Part of the Exynos Modem lineup, the new chip features an AI accelerator, or neural processing unit (NPU). This allows the chip to predict satellite movements and communication beam status in real time while reaching maximum signal connectivity.

The current modem chips have some limitations when it comes to directly connecting to low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. However, Samsung’s new modem can perform 55 times better in identifying communication beams and 42 times better in predicting channels than existing chips.

Samsung is also gearing up to secure a role in Starlink’s 6G NTN network. “The two companies have already begun discussions to enter the supply chain for the 6th generation (6G) non-terrestrial network (NTN) components that SpaceX is building,” said an industry insider. This network is important for autonomous cars and humanoid robots. Last month, SpaceX bought 50 MHz of wireless spectrum and global satellite service frequencies for about $17 billion to support it.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s partnership recently expanded to Tesla. During Tesla’s third-quarter earnings call, Elon Musk confirmed that Samsung, along with TSMC, will produce the AI5 chip. In July, Tesla reached a $16.5 billion contract with Samsung, where the Korean foundry will make the carmaker’s next-gen AI6 processor.
