Update 11/04 03:00 PM: OpenAI has officially launched its AI video creation app, Sora, on Android. It’s now available for download on the Google Play Store across the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Original reporting as of October 23 follows.

I — or you — may have strong opinions about AI-generated videos. Ethically, there’s plenty to question, especially regarding how it impacts the essence of true art. Yet, you might find yourself watching a YouTube Shorts video during a doomscrolling session (which, by the way, YouTube now lets you time-limit), and you’re genuinely impressed by the results. One popular tool for creating such videos is OpenAI’s Sora 2.

OpenAI’s Sora AI video generator is coming soon to your Android device!

In a somewhat packed announcement, Sora lead Bill Peebles wrote on X that the app is coming soon to Android phones. For now, you can pre-register for Sora by OpenAI on the Play Store. While there’s no specific launch date yet, the phrase “coming soon” suggests the team is taking the release seriously.

Peebles also shared that OpenAI has rolled out some useful updates for Sora, making it easier and more fun to use. The biggest addition is the character cameo feature. This lets you upload pictures or videos of animals or characters you create and watch them move and talk. A simple way to bring pets, drawings, or original characters to life, isn’t it?

Once the Sora app is live on Android, the possibilities expand. You could make your cat “talk” in a funny video or animate a character from a story you wrote. Peebles also highlighted new editing tools that allow you to combine multiple clips directly in Sora, so you won’t need another app to assemble your videos. These updates make creating content faster and more creative.

On top of that, Sora now runs smoother, with faster performance and fewer glitches. Social features have been enhanced as well, including personalized channels that make it easier to share content and connect with others. We’re excited to see how these improvements perform on Android phones.
