Google May Kick Samsung Exynos Modem Out of its Next Tensor Chip
While TSMC made Google’s latest Tensor G5 chip using its advanced 3nm process, Samsung continues to supply its Exynos modem. However, with the next-generation Tensor chip (for Pixel 11), the Mountain View giant could move away from the Korean firm completely. Report suggests that Google may integrate MediaTek’s M90 modem in its upcoming chip.
Google may drop Samsung’s modem in favor of MediaTek’s solution in its upcoming chip
For the past four generations, Samsung has been manufacturing Google’s Tensor chips using its cutting-edge process. The partnership began with the first-ever Tensor G1 (for Pixel 6) and continued through to the Tensor G4 (for Pixel 9). However, starting with the Tensor G5, which powers the Pixel 10 lineup, the company switched to TSMC’s foundry.
Despite canceling the chip manufacturing contract, Google stuck with Samsung’s Exynos modem for the latest Tensor. The modem offers high-speed cellular connectivity for devices for a bunch of data-intensive applications. However, the modem deal may not continue any longer. Reports suggest Google won’t use a Samsung modem in the next-generation Tensor chip.
According to tipster Mystic Leaks on Telegram, the company plans to use MediaTek’s M90 modem in the Tensor G6. The possible reason is that MediaTek’s latest offering is faster and more energy-efficient than Samsung’s modem. Debuted at MWC 2025, the M90 modem uses advanced AI and 5G features, offering differentiated performance with more design flexibility. It delivers downlink speeds of up to 12Gbps, giving users fast connectivity.
Of course, this move will impact Samsung’s semiconductor business, which has been struggling lately. Meanwhile, in other areas, the partnership between Google and Samsung remains strong, mainly in the software segment. For example, the latest Galaxy devices have integrated Google’s Gemini as the default AI assistant. Likewise, Samsung’s DeX has made its way into Android 16, offering a desktop-like experience. Furthermore, Google is involved in Samsung’s upcoming XR headset project.
