Samsung Clears Nvidia Quality Test, Secures 12-Layer HBM3E Deal: Report

Samsung has reportedly passed Nvidia’s quality test for its 12-layer HBM3E memory products. The Korean firm reached an agreement with the American chip giant to supply an initial batch of 10,000 units. The deal is expected to help the company boost confidence in the growing HBM market, which it has been struggling to gain a foothold in.

Last month, a report said that Samsung will supply between 30,000 and 50,000 units of 12-layer HBM3E chips to Nvidia, which plans to integrate them into its water-cooled server systems. However, since the qualification process remained pending, the Korean giant did not receive the order at the time. It looks like Samsung has now cleared the test and will step into Nvidia’s supply chain.

According to a Korean media report (via @Jukanlosreve), Nvidia recently signed a supply agreement with Samsung for 12-layer HBM3E products. Under the contract, Samsung will ship 10,000 units, which is lower than the originally estimated volumes. However, this is just an initial order. If Nvidia is satisfied with performance and stability, the quantity may increase in the future.

Moreover, the agreement itself is a breakthrough for Samsung, as it has faced setbacks several times in its attempts to supply Nvidia with its fifth-generation HBM products. As demand for high-performance computing (HPC) and advanced technologies increases, HBM chipmakers are competing to attract major clients with their offerings. Industry leader SK Hynix has made significant progress in this space, supplying chips to global tech giants like Nvidia.

However, in recent months, Samsung has also begun securing major deals that could help grow its HBM business. The company has struck an HBM3E chip agreement with Broadcom and AMD. This suggests the Korean firm is on the right track to regain lost ground and recover market share in the competitive HBM market.
