The first One UI 8 beta update for the Galaxy S24 series includes Samsung’s new adaptive lock screen clock. It dynamically adjusts the clock placement based on the subject of your wallpaper. This feature is missing on the Galaxy S25’s beta build, though the Fold 7 and Flip 7 have it. However, it still has many quirky issues, including some surprisingly avoidable ones.

Samsung needs to put more effort into One UI 8’s adaptive lock screen clock

Samsung’s idea with the adaptive lock screen clock in One UI 8 is simple but clever. The system analyzes the wallpaper, detects the main subject, and then shifts the clock to a less obtrusive position, creating a cleaner, more balanced layout. However, there’s a catch — the adaptive clock’s subject detection only works if you apply your wallpaper through Samsung’s own wallpaper app or the Gallery.

These methods trigger a pre-computing step that identifies the subject before the wallpaper is set. If you use a third-party wallpaper app, that pre-processing never happens. As a result, the adaptive clock won’t know where to move, breaking the intended effect entirely. If you save the image locally on your device and then apply it as a wallpaper, the feature works reliably.

For a feature that’s meant to be part of the OS-wide lock screen experience, this feels like an oversight. Users who rely on third-party customization tools are left out, not because of hardware limitations, but seemingly due to a lack of broader integration.

It’s a neat addition to One UI 8, but until Samsung expands the subject detection process, the adaptive clock’s smartest trick will only work if you stick to Samsung’s own wallpaper tools. Hopefully, the company is working on broader third-party integration behind the scenes. We shall find out when it drops the fifth beta update for the Galaxy S25 series next week.
