Samsung may have retired the Galaxy Note series years ago, but it hasn’t abandoned its final models. The Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra continue to receive regular security patches. The company has just released a new update for the duo, delivering the July 2025 security patch. Interestingly, it comes only a couple of weeks after a previous update that carried the very same patch.

Galaxy Note 20 series gets a fresh update — it could be the final one

Late last month, Samsung rolled out the July 2025 security patch to the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra globally, including in the US. The company is now pushing another update to the last Note phones, starting in Korea. Interestingly, the latest release carries the same security patch, not the newer August 2025 build.

This may be an indication of Samsung wrapping up software support for the Galaxy Note 20 duo. As per its support policy, the devices are eligible for updates until August 2025, and the company has just delivered that. At best, the devices could receive one more security patch before the end of their lives. We shall know for sure in a few weeks.

Until then, Galaxy Note 20 users should keep an eye out for the latest release. In Korea, the update comes with the firmware build versions N981NKSS9HYG5 (base model) and N986NKSS9HYG5 (Ultra). Samsung should roll out this update to the duo in more markets in the coming days. As usual, you can check for updates from Settings > Software update > Download and install.

With updates ending soon, it’s high time Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra users upgrade to a newer model. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the best pick if you want a built-in S Pen. However, the S Pen no longer supports Air Actions or Bluetooth-powered functions such as remote camera shutter.
