Samsung made its Galaxy Z Fold 7 slimmer, wider, taller, and lighter compared to the previous generation. As such, durability is more of a concern than ever, especially considering it’s a foldable device. Did it survive JerryRigEverything’s durability test across scratches, dust, heat, and bending? Let’s find out.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 durability test

While Samsung claims substantial durability improvements for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — such as a stronger hinge and better materials — you still need to follow usual warnings when using the device. This includes not pressing too hard on the inner screen, making sure there’s nothing inside between the screens when folding the phone, avoiding dust, and more.

Popular YouTuber Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything recently took the device for a spin to test how strongly it holds when subject to extreme physical torture. He begins the Galaxy Z Fold 7 durability evaluation with a scratch test. The outer screen started scratching at level 6 on the Mohs scale, just like other flagship phones. Thanks to Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, the test shows pretty good results.

Unfortunately, it failed to impress during the inner screen scratch test, as it scratches at level 2, and even fingernails can leave permanent marks. This is concerning, despite Samsung using a 50% thicker Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) protective layer compared to the previous model. So, its durability is surely something you will want to keep in mind.

As part of the dust test, YouTuber sprinkled dust all over the phone, but surprisingly, there was no damage to the hinge or screen. While Samsung advises users to avoid dust, it seems that dust won’t easily get inside the internal hinge, which is impressive. During the burn test, the folding screen survived for about 10 seconds before showing permanent burn marks, while the cover screen lasted around 15 seconds.

Impressive bend test results

Speaking of the bend test, Zack first tried to bend it horizontally while it was in the folded state. Surprisingly, there were no cracks or signs of serious damage, and the device continued to function properly. He then bent it backwards while it was open, and again, there were no cracks in the screen and no damage to the hinge. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s folding screen can withstand up to 500,000 folds, which equals about 100 folds per day for nearly 10 years.

This impressive bend test result shows that Samsung has really put a lot of effort into the durability of the phone’s foldable mechanism. The phone is available for purchase on Samsung’s official website with an exclusive Mint color option.
