A few days ago, Google started rolling out Gemini to several Galaxy smartwatches running Wear OS 4 or later. It arrives as an update to the Google Assistant app, which replaces the name with Google Gemini on Wear OS. However, it still launches the Google Assistant interface, meaning you can’t get the Gemini experience on your Galaxy Watch.

Google Assistant becomes Gemini on Wear OS after recent update

As we know, Wear OS 6 brings the Gemini assistant to the latest Galaxy Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic, and Watch Ultra (2025). However, Google has said that your smartwatch does not need to be running Wear OS 6 to get the Gemini assistant. The company has started making its AI-powered assistant available to older Samsung smartwatches running Wear OS 4 through an app update.

If you want to get the taste of Gemini right from your wrist, you will need to install the latest update to the Google Assistant app via the Play Store. To use the AI assistant on your watch, make sure you have set Gemini as the digital assistant app on your connected phone. If you want to interact with Gemini, just say Hey Google and start your conversation. You can also trigger the chatbot by pressing and holding the side button on your watch.

Unfortunately, users with older watches like the Galaxy Watch 4 may not see any real difference just yet — it still opens the Google Assistant interface. This leads us to believe that, even though Google has said Gemini runs on the Wear OS 4/5 platform, the full Gemini experience still relies on newer software, Wear OS 6. It’s also possible that Google may push another update to the app in the coming weeks that brings the complete Gemini functionality. Things should become clearer soon.

Samsung has confirmed the One UI 8 Watch update will be available for the Galaxy Watch 4 series. However, these models will not be part of the beta program, so users may have to wait for the stable release to experience Gemini right from their wrist.
